CLEVELAND (AP) — In a shocking turn of events, LeBron James has announced that he is transitioning to become a transgender woman and will be joining the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
The four-time NBA MVP, who has dominated the league for nearly two decades, made the announcement in an emotional press conference on Tuesday.
"I have always felt like a woman trapped in a man's body," James said, fighting back tears. "And now, after much soul-searching and support from my loved ones, I am proud to announce that I am transitioning to become my true self."
James, who has long been an advocate for LGBTQ rights, said that joining the WNBA was always a dream of his and he is looking forward to competing against the best female basketball players in the world.
"I know there will be challenges and obstacles along the way, but I am ready to face them head-on and show the world that transgender athletes can compete at the highest level," James said.
The news has sent shockwaves throughout the basketball world, with many praising James for his bravery and others questioning whether he will have an unfair advantage over his female competitors.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert released a statement saying that the league fully supports James and is excited to welcome him to the league.
"We are committed to inclusion and diversity, and we know that LeBron will be a great addition to the WNBA," Engelbert said. "We look forward to seeing him on the court and competing at the highest level."
James, who is currently signed to the Los Angeles Lakers, said that he will sit out the remainder of the NBA season to focus on his transition. He plans to join the WNBA for the 2023 season.
Only time will tell how this historic decision will impact the world of basketball, but one thing is for sure: LeBron James is making history and inspiring others to be true to themselves.
